March Rides in on a Commuter Train

Instant #1 New York Times Bestseller

Amazon's Book for the month January 2015

“Like most Londoners, Paula Hawkins became very familiar with the daily commute. But unlike most passengers, she has turned her experiences of being on a packed train, gazing idly out of the window at the back of houses, into a terrific psychological thriller. . . . I can safely predict this impressive, accomplished thriller will be everywhere—look out for it on your daily commute.”
The Bookseller
“The pace and tension of the plot never jump the track. This novel will leave you as breathless as a ride on the new, high-speed commuter train in London.”
—Roberta Rich, author of the international bestseller THE MIDWIFE OF VENICE

"What a group of characters, what a situation, what a book! It's Alfred Hitchcock for a new generation and a new era."
—Terry Hayes

And then she sees something shocking. It’s only a minute until the train moves on, but it’s enough. Now everything’s changed. Unable to keep it to herself, Rachel offers what she knows to the police, and becomes inextricably entwined in what happens next, as well as in the lives of everyone involved. Has she done more harm than good?

Compulsively readable, The Girl on the Train is an emotionally immersive, Hitchcockian thriller and an electrifying debut.

The All-Girl Filling Station's Last Reunion: A Novel Next book selection, Roz will host.

This latest novel by Fannie Flagg has everything readers of Flagg's earlier works have come to expect. The plot line has several surprises, the style is distinctively Flagg, and the characters are richly created.

Readers see two main story threads. One is in near-present-day Point Clear, Alabama. Sookie Poole, wife of the local dentist and a definitive "Old South" lady, has an eccentric mother to try to keep under control, and a friend, Marvaleen, who is interested in New Age and yoga and encourages Sookie to do the same. Sookie loves to feed the wild birds, but one difficulty of her day is the fact that the larger birds shoo away the small ones.

October Book Club

Lovely afternoon at Kelly's home. Fantastic food as usual.
This is how we feel because Kelly and Lisa were absent!

Orphan Train was our book of discussion.  We all enjoyed the read tremendously! Although it was a novel, the research was spot on. It was an amazing and shocking period in American history.

We all liked the author's ability to draw us into the characters. However, most felt it was an abrupt ending.

Next book selection:

Kathy selected a favorite author - Harlan Cobin  -  Missing You - Nov. 23

"From #1 New York Times bestselling author Harlan Coben, a heart-pounding thriller about the ties we have to our past...and the lies that bind us together."

"It's a profile, like all the others on the online dating site. But as NYPD Detective Kat Donovan focuses on the accompanying picture, she feels her whole world explode, as emotions she’s ignored for decades come crashing down on her. Staring back at her is her ex-fiancé Jeff, the man who shattered her heart—and who she hasn’t seen in 18 years."

Here on Earth Wrap-Up

Lovely afternoon at Lisa's home. Lots of great food: Roz brought our favorite dip, Kathy brought our fav -  JoJo's pizza . In addition we had quiche, pears with Parmesan cheese, roasted Brussels's sprouts, healthy peanut/chocolate cookies and skinny ice cream sandwiches. Oh and wine!

The book was read by most and liked by most. The author carried us along even if we could not get a handle on the heroine's (March)  motives to stay with such an awful guy (Hollis).  There were some beautiful descriptions of the horse and the woods. Still, it was an uncomfortable bunch of characters. So nicely written but depressing. Worth noting  - this was once an Oprah book selection.

BTW Lisa noticed these fun suggestions:

No chance of that we like each other too much!
And after the discussion here's what we did for entertainment:

.....go figure!
